Standard 4 Design and implement learning experiences that value diversity

Practice:
Teachers apply professional knowledge and understanding of learners, the curriculum and teaching and learning to:

  • create learning environments in which individual and group differences are valued and respected and all students have equitable access to learning

Knowledge:

Teachers know and understand:
  • different types of individual learning needs, including the particular needs of students with disabilities and learning difficulties and gifted students, and support services for such students

During my lessons I would cater for individual learners through using a range of different teaching methods. I would cater for visual learners through PowerPoint presentations, video clips, notes on the board and visual instruments. On one occasion whilst teaching my year 9 Chemistry class about rust and corrosion I brought in rusted metal items so students could visually see the affects that had taken place. I would explain all examples and each slide of the PowerPoint presentations. This catered for the auditory learners within the classroom. Finally I implemented group work and practical tasks within my classes to engage the kinaesthetic learners and give them an opportunity to excel.

  • How do you demonstrate an appreciation of the diverse backgrounds and characteristics of the students?

During my 6 week prac teaching at Helensvale State High school I learnt the names of all students within my classes. I also took an interest in each one personally and tried to get to know them on a one to one basis. I treated each student with respect and gave them all an equal opportunity to be involved within classroom activities.
