Practice:
Teachers apply professional knowledge and understanding of learners, the curriculum and teaching and learning to:
-
establish and maintain respectful, productive and collaborative relationships with families, caregivers and other community members to support student learning and wellbeing
Knowledge:
-
strategies for developing and maintaining partnerships and effectively communicating with families, caregivers and other community members
At this stage I have not had the opportunity to speak with the family members of my students. This will be one of the standards that I focus particular attention to during my second prac teaching period at Merrimac High School.
I will look to call home when students have performed well in class or otherwise. This will let the parents know who I am as a prac teacher and that I am continuing their children’s education. It will show that I care about their involvement in their child’s education and that with their help we can continue to progress their child’s academic performance.
If I get the opportunity I will invite a parent or community member into the classroom to talk to the students about a topic relevant to the teaching area. This will not only give the students access to someone with real life experience and a wealth of knowledge on the topic but also potentially offer the students another career path.
Finally I will take notes on individual student’s progression and use this to develop a report for the parents. This way I can show the development their child has made and if need be let the parents know areas where their child is struggling.
